Car Accidents When Backing Up

Posted on March 10, 2019 in

Far too many car accidents happen annually in Manhattan due to motorists not exercising the proper degree of due care when backing up. Although many car accidents that occur when motorists are backing-up involve only property damage to vehicles, other such accidents can result in devastating injuries. If a car that is backing up or moving in reverse, comes into contact with a bicyclist, motorcyclist or pedestrian, the impact may even result in a fatality.

How Do Backing Up Accidents Happen?

Many auto operators look behind them before backing up by properly turning their body in their seat to ensure that no vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians are behind them. Others only glance in their rear-view mirror instead of fully turning their body around. Some drivers only look in their side-view or rear-view mirrors if they have trouble twisting around fully to see clearly behind them. And others still depend on the latest technological advances available in many late model cars and rely solely on the back-up cam. So why do so many accidents occur if most drivers do check their surroundings before placing their vehicle in reverse and backing up? Here are some possible reasons:

The number of auto accidents that occur due to vehicles backing-up and striking cyclists or pedestrians in Manhattan can be reduced by looking behind you before placing your car’s transmission in reverse and backing up. You should also double check your side-view and rear-view mirrors in conjunction with your car’s back-up camera, if so equipped. In high traffic areas, it may even be a good idea to get out of your car and look around before backing-up.
