NYC Car Accidents Can Result in Scarring
Often times a broken bone sustained in a New York City car accident can heal remarkedly well. However, if you sustain a slash or abrasion to your skin from a contact within the car you’re in, such as if you hit the steering wheel, dashboard, or windshield causing injuries, or from broken glass, it is not unlikely that scarring will result. The result of a scar can be more emotionally tolling than a fractured limb.
What Types of Scars May Occur as the Result of an Auto Accident?
• Keloid Scars: A keloid scar is a raised scar that may actually grow larger than the original wound when the scar initially onset. In addition to their aesthetic appearance which can cause embarrassment and lowered self-esteem, keloids can also be excruciatingly painful. Thankfully, however, keloids do not turn into cancer.
• Hypertrophic Scars: Hypertrophic scars do not extend beyond the site of the original injury, and therefore, are dissimilar to keloid scars although they may look similar.
• Contracture Scars: These types of scars are most commonly seen as the result of burns, and may occur if your car went on fire as a result of the auto accident. This type of scar may be raised and can be treated with steroid injections to reduce inflammation.
Is Surgery Available for Scars and Keloids After an NYC Car Accident?
Yes. The appearance of a scar may be minimized after an automobile accident with a process known as scar revision. Plastic surgeons can perform reconstructive plastic surgery and excellent results may be achieved based on many different factors such as the location, type, and size of the scar. An experienced plastic surgeon should be consulted in this regard.
What Can One Expect After Surgery to Repair Scarring After an Auto Accident?
Bandages will be placed over the site of the scar and the subsequent surgical revision and your physician may prescribe medication to reduce the chance of infection and to reduce your pain. Steroid injections may also be indicated post-surgery on the advice of your physician.
What is the Value of a Scar?
It depends on where the scar is, the age and gender of the person who sustained a scar as a result of the vehicle accident and where the scar is. For example, a young woman who sustains a facial scar may be entitled to a significant recovery whether by settlement or verdict. New York City juries have returned verdicts in excess of $100,000.00 for facial scars as the result of an auto accident in NYC. An older man who suffers a scar on his shoulder would likely be entitled to a lesser recovery amount for a similar scar.
